Chania, the Centre of Operations in Crete
Chania, one of Crete’s most famous and appealing cities, is located on the west and is the second largest city of Crete. Chania, built on the ruins of ancient Kidonia, can be divided in two parts, the Old and the New Town. The old town of Chania is where all the charm of Chania is mostly concentrated, with Kastelli, the Venetian fortress that rises in the centre of it, and the old Venetian quarter around the harbor. But, while the New Town is not as picturesque or of historical value as the Old Town, it still is a place you should also visit, as it holds the tomb and house of Eleftherios Venizelos, the “Palace” built in 1882 to house Prince George and the churches of Agia Magdalini and Evangelistria. Overall, Chania is one of the most beautiful cities in Crete and in Greece, thus having gained the respect and love of the tourists and the Greeks from all over the country.
