Heraklio, a Modern City with a Tinge of History
Heraklio, the capital of Crete, named after semi-God Hercules, is a dynamic modern city that does not charm the way the rest of the Prefecture capitals in Crete do. But thankfully, the appeal of Heraklio (formerly known as Candia) is not lost beneath the traffic-jammed streets and the up-to-date apartment buildings: the remnants of Knossos and Phaestos, both near Heraklio, are a paradise for the culturally inclined, revealing the lot of life and the thought of a whole civilization, the Minoans. But the ruins of Knossos and Phaestos are not the only drawcard of Heraklio! The archaeological museum of Heraklio is outstanding and can only be compared to the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.
