City:(Laconia) Sparta, the Place of FireAncient Sparta was a disciplined and private city that didn’t allow non-Spartans in, a city of unique virtues and rules that all led to a strong community always prepared to win wars. If you visit Sparta, you will come to find that it is very much in contrast with that ancient image. Sparta is an easy-going town of wide, tree-lined streets, hotels with modern amenities, shops and restaurants. Sparta’s rich historical associations can be recognized in sites such as the statue of King Leonidas, the 2nd or 3rd century ancient theatre (the most discernible ruin), the foundation of an ancient bridge over the Eurotas and, of course, the Archaeological Museum of Sparta. So, even if you don’t find as much as you expected, be sure Sparta will thrill you! |
