Lefkada, a Special Island

Lefkada is a beauteous, mountainous island situated in the Ionian Sea. Lefkada is special in many ways: the houses’ architecture is unique, since they were rebuilt after the 1948 earth-quake in order to provide protection from future earthquakes and still be as beautiful as they were; the lagoon in the town of Lefkada and Gira, the narrow lane of white sand embracing its north side, were both enlisted to the NATURA 2000 network as protected areas; the resort of Vasiliki is considered to be the best windsurfing location in Europe. But Lefkada offers more than that! The Santa Mavra fortress, one of the most imposing medieval buildings in Greece, as well as the ravishing beaches in the west (with the brilliant example of Porto Katsiki) are yet two more reasons to consider Lefkada as special.
