City:(Rethymno)
Rethymno, a Town of Venetian Beauty
Rethymno is the third largest city of Crete and an underestimated one as well. On the western side of Crete, Rethymno flourished mainly under Venetian rule and that Venetian touch still prevails. The fortetza, a beautiful fort built in 1573, is the brightest example of that. But, other than that, what should you not miss? The Moni Arkadiou, a monastery where the Cretans set light to a store of gunpowder when surrounded by Turks, thus killing everyone but a young girl in 1866; the Rimondi fountain and the archaeological museum; the village of Spili with its lion fountainheads, water flowing straight from the top of Mount Psiloritis. These will make your stay an unforgettable experience, along with the narrow streets of the Old Town and the complaisant residents of Rethymno!
