City:(Syros) Syros, Queen of the CycladesSyros is the capital island of the Cycladic Island complex, the centre of operations and at the same time, one of the most beautiful Greek islands. Two are its basic cities, Ermoupoli and Ano Syros, each offering something different. Ermoupoli, named after god Hermes, the messenger of the gods, is an architecture miracle, perfect for a morning exploration, whereas Ano Syros is a comely Cycladic Hora, with intricate narrow streets and houses with colored doors. The museum of Archaeology in Syros, opened in 1834, is one of the oldest in Greece. But what makes Syros more special is that, while it’s a pole of attraction for the tourists, its economy is not based upon it, thus maintaining its medieval charm. |
